VISA: N1 & HSP – Let’s check your points.

Let’s check your points for HSP with the points calculation table.

Many foreigners studying Japanese to live a stable life in Japan take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test(JLPT). In 2024, approximately 150,000 people took the test in 96 locations worldwide. The test is held twice a year, in July and December. Those taking the test in July this year are likely studying Japanese diligently in preparation.

The JLPT is also related to residency status in Japan. If you are working in Japan under Technology/Specialist in Humanities/International Service visa, and pass the JLPT Level 1, let’s use the point calculation table for the Highly Skilled Professional Visa (HSP).

The HSP offers various preferential measures, one of which is that it may be advantageous when applying for permanent residency. To obtain the HSP, a total of 70 points or more is required based on the point calculation table. Passing the N1 exam adds 15 points, and passing the N2 exam adds 10 points to your score. This demonstrates that studying Japanese and understanding Japanese culture are highly valued from a visa perspective.

If you are considering applying for an HSP visa or permanent residency, it is advisable to consult with a visa specialist to review the point calculation.
